Forging, rolling, drawing: Solid forming options

The functional properties of a steel, regardless of its composition, require at least one forming process. A masterpiece of precision and metal processing.

Versatile rolling mills: from ingot to semi-finished product and bar steel

All Swiss Steel Group production sites have rolling mills that expand the product portfolio beyond ingots to include semi-finished products for the processing industry (e.g. forging), steel bars and wire rod. Semi-finished products are subject to lower demands on the tightness of the finished material, as further forming is mandatory here. We supply rolled semi-finished products in square dimensions of 50 - 320 mm². Our rolling mills are designed to produce steel bars in all quality groups, from engineering steel to high-alloy tool steel. Bar steel in round, square and rectangular dimensions is possible, and our systems can also produce special lengths of up to 24 metres.

Thermomechanical rolling, i.e. rolling with strictly controlled temperatures, is a speciality for some of our stainless steel products.

Wire rod and wire drawing for versatile dimensions

The production of wire rod extends the product range of rolled products with round dimensions from 5 to 32 mm, as well as hexagonal profiles from 12.4 - 28 mm and profiles for reinforcing steel, especially for the construction industry.

Associated drawing mills round off the range of dimensions in the lower range from 0.013 mm to 22 mm.

Forging power in large format

The forging units from the Swiss Steel Group complement the production programme for high-quality special and stainless steels in the upper dimension range. The 33 MN open-die forging press covers the upper size range up to 1000 mm and a maximum weight of up to 27 tonnes. In addition to being used as a pre-forging unit, cylindrical moulded parts are also contour forged here.

Radiale schmiede

Precision and performance

Our radial forging machine is one of the largest numerically controlled hydraulic-mechanical forging machines in Europe. Dimensions up to 450 mm are produced here. Near-net-shape contour forging is also possible here. Last but not least, a smaller forging machine forges all difficult-to-form materials in the 50 - 130 mm size range.
