Ferro-Titanit

In modern industry, tools and machine components are facing increasingly demanding requirements. Not only do they have to withstand high loads and stresses, they also need to have a combination of different properties such as wear resistance, hardness, machinability and heat resistance. Ferro Titanit is an innovative high-performance composite material for your demanding applications.

Positive future perspectives

The unique combination of properties makes Ferro-Titanit® an indispensable material in modern industrial applications, and its ongoing development promises even more exciting potential for the future.

Wide application field

The exceptional properties of Ferro-Titanit® make it a promising choice for companies looking for high-performance and durable materials. In the automotive industry, food processing, mechanical engineering or electronics, Ferro-Titanit® can significantly increase the performance and service life of tools and components and contribute to increased efficiency.

Constructive advantages

The low weight results in design advantages with high centrifugal forces. Ferro-Titanit® is 50 % lighter than carbide and 15 % lighter than steel.

Advantages of Ferro-Titanit®

The outstanding properties of Ferro-Titanit® make it highly attractive and useful for various applications:

  • Hardness: With the ability to be hardened up to 70 HRC, Ferro-Titanit® exhibits exceptional hardness and resistance to wear and mechanical stress.
  • Low distortion: The material is characterized by minimal distortion during hardening, as the titanium carbide has low thermal expansion and undergoes no transformation properties.
  • Good compatibility with steel: Connections are ensured through diffusion bonding, brazing, or hot isostatic pressing. In a combination, FerroTitanit® is only present where needed – in the wear-prone area. The steel as the base material allows material savings, provides higher toughness, and can be processed more cost-effectively.
  • Reusability: A significant advantage of Ferro-Titanit® lies in the ability to anneal used tools and wear parts multiple times, transforming them into new parts without negative microstructural changes.
  • Machinability: Ferro-Titanit® is machinable and can be processed using conventional methods of machining.
  • Minimized tendency to cold welding: The titanium carbides in Ferro-Titanit® (approximately 50 vol.-%) do not react with other materials. The hardly detectable cold welding on well-polished tools results in long service life with an excellent surface.
  • Low weight: Ferro-Titanit® is 50% lighter than cemented carbide and even 15% lighter than steel. This provides structural advantages in situations with high centrifugal forces.

Climate-neutral steel production

With our Green Steel, we are taking an important step towards climate-neutral steel production. Scrap steel is used as the main raw material and the steel is produced using the electric steel process with energy sources with a low CO2 content. This results in a CO2 footprint well below the industry average.

Properties and production of Ferro-Titanit®

Ferro-Titanit® represents a family of powder metallurgically produced, highly alloyed composite materials. These materials are particularly characterized by their machinability and hardenability, combining the best properties of tool steel and hard metal. The distinctive feature of Ferro-Titanit® is an impressive titanium carbide content of up to 50 vol.%, embedded in an alloyed steel binding phase. This imparts crucial material properties such as strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance, while the carbides primarily enhance hardness and wear resistance.

The range of Ferro-Titanit alloys allows precise adaptation to the specific requirements of a tribological system. As a result, seven different grades of Ferro-Titanit® are created, categorized based on the specific binding phase into three groups: Carbon-Martensites, Soft-Martensites, and Austenites. Each of these groups has specific properties and applications ranging from metal processing to high-temperature applications. Whether it's Ferro-Titanit® C-Special, Ferro-Titanit® WFN, Ferro-Titanit® S, Ferro-Titanit® Nikro 128, Ferro-Titanit® Nikrodur, Ferro-Titanit® Nikro 143, Ferro-Titanit® Cromoni, or Ferro-Titanit® U, all have exceptional advantages.
