Material innovations for the industry

Material development as a central focus

Material development is a central focus of research and development within Swiss Steel Group. The emphasis is on environmentally friendly and efficient products. New steel grades are being developed to meet the specific requirements of various industries. This includes high-strength steels for the automotive sector, special alloys for aerospace, and 3D printing-compatible powder.

High-strength steels enable lighter yet more resilient vehicle structures, leading to improved fuel efficiency. In the aerospace industry, special alloys are needed to withstand extreme stresses and environmental conditions, and innovative powder for 3D printing facilitates easy prototyping or straightforward spare parts delivery.

In collaboration with universities and other research institutions, these steels are thoroughly tested for their processing and consumption properties.

Avoidance of toxic elements

In the development of free-cutting steels, compliance with REACH regulation is a priority to protect humans and the environment from risks associated with chemicals. Lead is one such chemical element often found as an alloy additive in automatic steels. For these steels, the goal is to either find other, less harmful alloying elements or to precisely adjust metallurgical processes so that equivalent steels meet the high demands for steel machinability.

Steels for lightweight construction

Driven by the automotive industry, the research departments of Swiss Steel Group have successfully participated in the 'Steels for Lightweight Construction' project. We have succeeded in refining metallurgical processes to produce steels whose mechanical and technological properties have been enhanced in terms of strength and toughness to such an extent that smaller cross-sections contribute significantly to weight reduction.

High-strength steels

The construction industry benefits from our development of high-strength steels, for example, for fasteners and reinforcing steels that make concrete structures lighter and foundations more stable. Novel corrosion-resistant steels provide excellent protection against corrosion from exhaust gases (for example, in bridge and tunnel construction) or halogen-containing atmospheres (for example, in swimming pools), and additionally offer a significant aesthetic improvement in claddings.

AddSteel

New steel materials for additive manufacturing

The goal is to develop optimized steel materials suitable for additive manufacturing. The focus of the project is on defining material compositions and determining optimal parameters for powder production and the actual 3D printing process.

In addition to adjusting an ideal powder size distribution, the performance of printed components is tested, and an analysis of the cost-effectiveness of the manufacturing process is conducted.
