Steel for wind energy

The rotor blades of modern wind turbines can reach lengths of over a hundred metres and rotate at around six metres per second at full load. In addition, they are exposed to abrupt loads in gusty winds. This demands maximum performance from the materials used for the gears, bearings and fastening elements such as screws and bolts. Swiss Steel Group provides the right steel for these special requirements.

Steels from the wind portfolio

In addition to the visible structures of a wind turbine, the centrepiece is now often located many metres above the ground. Shafts, gears, bearings and screws are crucial for keeping the rotor blades in motion, ensuring low-friction bearings, minimising energy losses and enabling the wind turbine to be aligned depending on the wind direction.

With the increasing height of wind turbines and the installation of turbines offshore or in other hard-to-reach locations, maintenance work on the turbines is extremely challenging. It is therefore imperative that all components are of the highest quality.

Product quality

Swiss Steel Group meets the demanding quality requirements and guarantees consistently high and reliable quality with high-purity gear and roller bearing steels for a long service life of the systems. Our heat-treatable steels ensure stability and toughness for screws and fasteners.

Due to the corrosive effect of seawater and sea air, the use of corrosion-resistant steels is essential for offshore wind turbines, especially for fastening and connecting elements. Here too, Swiss Steel Group offers the right steel solution in a precise design from its wide-ranging portfolio. The steels used in wind turbines must have high wear resistance and fatigue strength as well as high toughness and homogeneity.

Are you looking for customized steel solutions for your wind energy application? We are on hand to advise you on selecting the right steel.
