Ready for the challenges of tomorrow

The challenges in the automotive market are manifold. These include the relocation of production sites, new environmental legislation and the switch from mass production to a variety of products in small quantities. At the same time, the technological demands placed on cars are increasing, as is the need for safety and comfort.

With our steel, designers can realise versatile and high-performance components and systems in a specific and cost-efficient manner. We supply customised solutions of consistently high quality for engine components, high-pressure pumps, exhaust systems, chassis components, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and airbags.

The overview for your construction project

Find the right steel faster with the Materials Guide

The Swiss Steel Group Materials Guide helps you to find the right steel solution for your individual requirements. It gives you a quick overview of the wide range of possible applications offered by our various steel grades for key application industries.

The right steel for every application

The heat-resistant steel Thermodur® 2383 Supercool ensures shorter cycle times in the production of sheet metal components such as the B-pillar: used for press hardening tools, Thermodur® combines hot forming and heat treatment - reducing process costs.

The plastic mould steel SF-2000® LQ40 is characterised by excellent purity. This makes it highly polishable: headlight lenses are given a crystal-clear surface and can be permanently reproduced in high quality.

The high-strength special steel ETG® 88/100 optimises manufacturing processes by eliminating additional operations such as tempering and grinding. This leads to shorter machining times, longer tool life and less machine downtime as well as cost savings thanks to optimised process sequences.

The high-strength special steel HSX® 90 ensures that the airbag sleeve can be welded in the shortest possible time to prevent the propellant from escaping. At the same time, the high-strength special steel can withstand enormous pressure until the airbag is deployed.

With a focus on lightweight components, the innovative bainitic steel Bainidur 1300 can be used to produce sophisticated forged parts cost-effectively. The material can be processed without distortion and with little machining allowance, which saves on complex process steps.

Swiss Steel Group for a sustainable future.

Our Green Steel is based on the circular economy, on energy sources with low CO2 content and is produced using the electric steel process.

  • ~83% lower CO2 footprint than World Steel Mix
  • ~80% decarbonised electricity in the steelworks
  • ~2 mn t recycled scrap per year

Maximum performance in a small space: the future of steel in the automotive industry

Our ETG® and HSX® special steel solutions ensure a long service life with low wear for every vehicle and engine. They make a decisive contribution to the development of sustainable, efficient and comfortable cars, commercial vehicles and construction machinery. One reason for this is the extremely high strength of our steel grades. Their improved machinability enables companies in the automotive industry to organise processes more economically and design components with a longer service life. Highly resilient, compact and dimensionally stable - this is how Swiss Steel Group's special steel contributes to sustainable mobility optimised for future technologies.

Case study: Increasing demands on drive shafts

"A drive shaft must transmit higher torques with increasing drive power and at the same time withstand increasing alternating loads," explains Dirk Ochmann, Global Vice President Machining Steels. "High material strengths are required so that the component can withstand the tough demands of use." A comparison of the torque of the drive shaft and the performance of the steels shows how the properties of the steels affect their suitability for use. The HSX®130 can transmit 96% more force than the C45E and 18% more than the 42CrMoS4 with a constant shaft diameter of 50 mm under alternating load.
