Extrusion

Extrusion is a significant process in bulk forming used in the industry to produce various profiles from metal or plastic, such as window frames. In this process, a heated block or rod, also known as a billet, is pressed under pressure through a die to create the desired shape.

Dimensional stability and shape retention

Critical to extrusion is, among other factors, the dimensional stability and shape retention of the die, ensuring the production of consistently high-quality products. A good resistance to wear at elevated temperatures and high thermal stability are the primary requirements imposed on the steel for the tool in this context.

Application areas

Wear tools, such as dies, bridge, chamber, and spider tools, as well as auxiliary tools like support tools, pressure rings, tool holders, or upsetting punches.

Customised solution

The experts at the Swiss Steel Group are available for consultation and provide tailored solutions for a wide range of requirements in the extrusion process.

Our product portfolio for extrusion

Thermodur® 2329 and Thermodur® 2714

These universally applicable tool steels stand out for their outstanding core strength and toughness, even in larger dimensions. They are particularly well-suited for applications requiring support tools, washers, and dies. Their limited high-temperature properties make them reliable companions for various applications.

Thermodur® 2343 EFS and Thermodur® 2344 EFS

These steels are the optimal choice for hot work applications in the extrusion process. They offer high wear resistance and toughness at elevated temperatures. Thanks to these properties, they meet a significant portion of tool requirements and contribute significantly to the quality and durability of extrusion tools.

Thermodur® 2367 EFS

With a higher content of carbide-forming alloying elements than Thermodur® 2343 and 2344, Thermodur® 2367 EFS excels in excellent hot wear resistance. This makes it the optimal choice for applications where high resistance to wear at high temperatures is required.

Thermodur® XLL EFS

This advancement of well-known hot work steels offers remarkable hot wear resistance, comparable to Thermodur® 2367 EFS. Additionally, Thermodur® XLL EFS impresses with increased toughness at the level of Thermodur® 2344 EFS. This steel is ideal for demanding applications that require both wear resistance and toughness.

Thermodur® E 38 K Superclean

As a high-quality remelted hot work steel, Thermodur® E 38 K Superclean provides outstanding toughness compared to conventional hot work steels. This makes it particularly suitable for large and highly complex tools in the extrusion process, ensuring reliable performance and durability in demanding environments.

Thermodur® E 40 K Superclean

Thermodur® E 40 K Superclean is the premium solution for extrusion tools with the highest demands. The combination of maximum toughness and high hot wear resistance makes this steel the top choice for extended tool service life in extrusion processes. Its outstanding isotropy of mechanical-technological properties makes it the perfect solution for medium to large extrusion dies with complex profiles.

Climate-neutral steel production

With our Green Steel, we are taking an important step towards climate-neutral steel production. Scrap steel is used as the main raw material and the steel is produced using the electric steel process with energy sources with a low CO2 content. This results in a CO2 footprint well below the industry average.
