By using products with circular raw materials (CRM) in 2023, which are supplied by MIRECO and Horn & Co. Products, the company has succeeded in saving more than 10,000 tons of CO2. This is compared to using equivalent products that are only made from new raw materials. In 2023, this was the highest CO2 saving (Scope 3 consideration) for products used in steel production at MIRECO & Horn & Co. products.

Large amounts of CO2 are saved at the Siegen plant by using refractory products with high recycling rates. This depends on the desired performance and requirements, which can vary from steelworks to steelworks.

The Swiss Steel Group, which is also this year's winner of the German Sustainability Award, is making great efforts and sparing no investment in its efforts to reduce its own CO2 footprint.

All of MIRECO's recycling concepts, which are based on the ZERO-Waste approach, generate circular raw materials that are mainly used in two material streams:

  •  CRM for refractory materials and
  •  CRM for metallurgical applications.

The metallurgical material flow is largely covered by MIRECO. The material flow for refractory materials requires a partner for refractory materials such as Horn & Co. products. Both material streams save CO2, make us less dependent on deliveries from overseas and, conversely, avoid landfill.
