Il gruppo degli acciai inossidabili martensitici si caratterizza per l'elevata resistenza caratteristica, la
buona resistenza alla corrosione e l'eccellente durezza. A differenza di molti altri tipi di acciaio
massiccio, mantengono un'eccellente formabilità anche a resistenze molto elevate.

Da fragile a robusto

L'aggiunta di carbonio (contenuto di C > 0,1 %) conferisce agli acciai ferritici una struttura martensitica (indurimento) durante il raffreddamento rapido. Poiché la martensite è fragile e soggetta a fessurazione da stress, questi materiali devono essere temperati dopo l'indurimento per rendere l'acciaio immagazzinabile e lavorabile. Le martensiti al carbonio hanno alta durezza e sono resistenti alla corrosione. Tuttavia, presentano solo bassa tenacità a basse temperature.
